Game Flight or Game Drive?

Let’s assume you have just arrived in Maun, Botswana and you have to plan your activity for the next day. If you have to choose between either doing a game flight or going on a day game drive to Moremi Game Reserve, what should you consider?

The game flight only takes about an hour. It leaves you plenty of time during the next day to rest, shop or catch up on some writing or reading. Mainly the participants seem to remember seeing herds of elephant or cape buffalo. Flying in a small Piper Cub is fun and if you are like me, you see the ground as a real life map.

On the other hand, a game drive starts early in the morning and is a full day activity. The potential to get close to lions, leopards, elephant, giraffe, hippo, wildebeest and a bounty of bird life are reasonably high. The packed lunch and chance for a short midday rest never disappoint.

If getting close to nature in a world renowned game reserve is your idea of fun, then the game drive is for you. If you need a rest and prefer a unique aerial perspective of the Okavango Delta, then go for the game flight.

When 5 large BMW motorbikes pull up at sundown, it creates a stir of excitement. When it turns out to be 4 Irishmen and and honourary Irishman from Finland, you know the ambiance will bubble with good-natured stories and laughter.

Apart from seeing Africa, these men are on a mission. You will be able to follow up how far our Team of 4 Dubai based biker's is progressing from stage to stage."

85 Ton Hitachi Excavator Comes To Maun

85 ton excavator arrives in Maun, Botswana - brought by a vehicle 4.2 metres wide, with 15 axles and 58 tires. It is enroute to Express Quarries in Tali Pan. The quarry is close to the Discovery Metals exploration property in the Kwgebe Hills. The total load weighed over 115 tons and must be the biggest delivery of its king in the history of Northern Botswana. In the video we have employees of the Maun Industrial Park celebrating the arrival of the new machine.

Okavango Delta Wetlands research trip. The Trans-Okavango Transect is the brainchild of Maun businessman, Lars Elvenes – it is a scientific, data-collecting expedition that traverses the Okavango from Maun to Mohembo. The transect takes 8 days to complete, and was undertaken between the 15th and 23rd of September this year. It is supported by BirdLife Botswana and the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre (HOORC); BirdLife Botswana was of course responsible for documenting the birdlife in the variety of habitats encountered, while a small team from HOORC monitored water quality, and collected samples of aquatic invertebrates and fish for analysis back at the Centre...

Okavango Delta - Wetlands Getting Wetter

Travellers from around the world are following, with growing interest, the strong floods pouring into the Okavango Delta. A post in the Maun, Botswana Blog about the flow rates at Mohembo is creating worldwide interest. Click on the above link to follow the developing story.

What has started as a strong annual flood with flow rates of over 400 cubic metres per second, has spike over 200 cubes in just 10 days. Kasane is experiencing wide ranging flooding as we speak and it is very possible a similiar situation is developing in the Okavango Delta. A new flow rate chart will be out after April 20th - chart is there!.

There is little doubt that Maun is growing quickly. Commercial and home construction continue to accelerate. Some times it is easy to miss individual failures.

The picture above represents broken dreams. Day by day the termites prosper and often donkeys rest inside - seeking shelter from the sun. The doors are gone and the windows are broken - the initial dream has been overtaken by termite castles.

The proportion of people that visit Botswana is still quite small and so the country remains relatively untouched - vast tracks of uninhabited land are given over to road less savanna and viewing the wildlife is by way of four wheel drive.
